An update on our project in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has entered an unprecedented deep economic and humanitarian crisis as a country. Basic necessities like rice, milk powder, medicine and fuel are scarce. There is massive inflation, daily food and the fuel to prepare it are barely affordable. The people blame the present government for this huge crisis. They accuse the present government of corruption and abuse of power, to the detriment of the already poor population. There are many riots in the country, especially for the government and its president to resign. For instance, a group has now attacked the presidential house and the president has fled. Partly because of this, tourism to Sri Lanka has also completely stopped, which only exacerbates the (economic) situation.
Our project in Sri Lanka, the Community College Programme in Nikaweratiya and Thanamalwila is also at risk because of this. The aim was to make the programme self-sustainable in the next three years through its own contributions. We are also proud that 12 different vocational courses/courses are now being run, in addition to childcare, and the average attendance per course is about 20 people. Thus, we are helping more than 200 families a month to a better tomorrow.
Only.... given the situation in the country currently, participants cannot afford the fees for these programmes. Because the need for thorough vocational training is very high, especially
