A worry-free birthday for Abdul's children
Abdul has been working at Hago Zorg since 2014. We spoke to him about his job, family, financial challenges, and the support he received from Vebego Foundation. “Some people feel ashamed to ask for help, but there’s really no need.”
Abdul shares: “My wife and I have a beautiful family with five children. We live in the Pijp neighborhood in Amsterdam with our three youngest (13, 6, and 4 years old). It’s a lively and friendly area. Our two eldest children have already moved out. I work 38 hours a week and take on as many weekend shifts as I can. My wife also works part-time. Still, it’s not always easy to make ends meet. Our energy bill, for example, has tripled. Even buying school supplies or celebrating our children’s birthdays is a big financial burden.”
School supplies and birthday boxes
That burden has been eased somewhat thanks to Vebego Foundation and the Sam& for All Children Foundation, Abdul explains. “I first heard about the possibilities during a presentation from the Foundation. It was a warm gesture, one I gratefully accepted. I reached out and received immediate support. Together, we bought school supplies for my youngest son, and my children’s birthdays are now registered with Stichting Jarige Job. On their birthdays, they now receive a birthday box - so we can still celebrate in a special way.”
Support for Vebego colleagues
This helping hand is available to all Vebego employees who could use a little extra support, Abdul emphasizes. “Some people are embarrassed to ask for help, but that’s really not necessary. It would be great if this topic was included more often in team meetings. You can also ask your manager about it or contact Josine Dekker from the Vebego Foundation directly. A lot is possible - I speak from experience.”
A bit of relief
Through Sam& for All Children, you can request support for things like school supplies, sports, music lessons, or celebrating a birthday. Vebego Foundation has entered into a long-term partnership with Sam& to offer targeted support to Vebego employees. Josine from Vebego Foundation explains: “We provide information in the workplace, show what kinds of support are available, and are always there to answer questions. Then we go through the application process together. That concrete support often brings immediate relief and peace of mind - and I wish that for everyone.”
