Donation to SOS Children's Villages Ukraine brings love and support
The war has caused hundreds of thousands of children from Ukraine to flee. Vebego Foundation donated an amount to SOS Children's Villages to help vulnerable families. We asked our contact Monique Oosteweegel how things are going in Ukraine and what they can do for children with the donation. 'Thanks to Vebego Foundation's donation, we have already been able to give 1,000 children a safe and warm home.'
The first priority of the emergency aid was to get the children and foster parents in the SOS children's villages in Ukraine - in Luhansk and Brovary near Kiev - to safety. And that succeeded, says Monique of "All children from our children's villages in Ukraine are now taken care of in the children's villages in 11 neighbouring countries. We also provide assistance in these neighbouring countries to children and families who have nowhere else to go. With shelter, food, water, medical care and psychosocial support.'
Daily contact
'We have almost daily contact with our colleagues in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. To gauge what they need. The director of SOS Children's Villages, Serhii Lukashov, is currently staying in a shelter in Kiev where it is minus 8 degrees at night. Serhii and his staff are trying to coordinate as much assistance as possible for children left behind who did not have a home in an SOS Children's Village, but at other care facilities. These children are completely on their own, as the caregivers have often fled. We are there for all children, even if they do not live in one of our villages. Therefore, we offer support and try to evacuate these children from Ukraine as well.'
We remain in Ukraine
'SOS Children's Villages has been active in Ukraine for 20 years. We are there and we are staying there. Even after this terrible war, we will do everything we can to rebuild the infrastructure to care for single children and vulnerable families. It is important that we start thinking about this now, because as a result of the war, even more children are left alone. That has a huge impact on a child, so we need to provide not only shelter, but also psychosocial support.'
