The Vebego Foundation was involved with the Sambodhi Institute in Baddegama from 2010 to 2012.
This is a facility where about 70 physically challenged women live with two caretakers. When we were first shown the residential buildings and sanitary facilities in 2009, they were in poor condition. The roof was leaking and the sleeping quarters were very dark.
After consultation with the caretakers, the Vebego Foundation renovated the residential buildings and the kitchen, built an infirmary and constructed a corridor linking the buildings. All of the furniture was also repainted.
Thanks to financial donations, the building volunteers were able to provide a new water tank, kitchen equipment and cleaning supplies, among other things.
In June 2013, a fire destroyed part of the residential building. Other parties then took up the cause, which meant that the Foundation did not donate to the renovation.
